Can Your Roof Go the Distance?

Great for the environment and easy to work with, InvariMatte® stainless steel is the perfect choice for beautiful, durable, energy-saving roofs.

InvariMatte® has a low glare texture which is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight, which makes it ideal for roofing applications. While it does have a muted appearance, there is just enough reflection going on to take on the colors of the environment around it. Looking bluish gray on a blue sky day, it takes on warm tones at sunset. InvariMatte® retains its original beauty over time without developing a patina. Its unique finish, which involves no coatings, is rolled directly into the surface of the metal. This process not only controls finish variability more closely than any other surface treatment available on bare metal, it also results in a visual effect that is extraordinary. The low gloss InvariMatte® finish is ideal for roofing applications, wall panels, coping and trim. Perfect for designs ranging from modern to historic renovations, its enduring beauty truly goes the distance.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Finishes

Stainless steel is a remarkably durable construction material that, when properly specified and installed, will last indefinitely. However, the accumulation of dirt and other contaminants warrant occasional cleaning in order to maintain stainless steel’s original appearance. While exterior applications not subjected to pedestrian contact will seldom require frequent cleaning, high traffic areas undoubtedly require more attention.

We are prepared to offer specific guidance in the event a particular contamination problem cannot be resolved using the methods described here. As with cleaning any material, it is best to try a hidden test area with the proposed cleaning method to be sure no unintended consequences occur. If there is doubt as to your ability to perform a particular stainless steel cleaning regimen, it is advisable to consult a professional cleaning service that has experience with stainless steel.

Metallic Corrosion

Aside from catastrophic damage, metallic corrosion is clearly the chief cause of metal building panel failure. When architectural metal panels corrode, there are undesirable consequences that go beyond cosmetics. Corroding panel systems will begin to leak, causing potentially significant damage to the interior of a building.

Repair costs can be substantial, usually involving removal and replacement. Studies conducted in recent years by both Battelle Laboratories and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) concur that in the United States alone, we spend $300 billion per year combating metallic corrosion.

Stainless Steel for Severe Marine Environments

Severe marine environments suggest that duplex stainless steel or titanium would be appropriate material choices for exterior building panel applications. These metals can be expected to last the life of the building with little or no maintenance. In most market conditions, stainless steel has an economic advantage compared to titanium. Additionally, titanium’s corrosion resistance in severe environments is unquestionable.

In light of these facts, we offer our suggestion of ATI 2003 Lean Duplex Stainless Steel with InvariMatte® finish as a suitable stainless steel grade and finish combination for exterior building envelope applications in severe marine environments.
